Are you ready for a simple and refreshing summer libation? The hardest part of this drink may be finding the right mineral water.
This cocktail hails from West Texas. It was popular with cattle ranchers (hence the name) during the very hot Texas summers. A Ranch Water borrows ingredients from a classic margarita. It’s simply good quality tequila, lots of freshly squeezed lime juice and mineral water.
Purists insist that there’s only one mineral water you can use – that’s Topo Chico. It has been naturally sourced and bottled in Monterey, Mexico since 1895. It has a high level of carbonation resulting in more bubbles per sip. Added bonus – Topo Chico contains magnesium, calcium, and sodium, all of which are considered essential electrolytes which contribute to a well functioning body. Consuming electrolytes might help you feel a bit better the next day if you overindulge.
In 2017, The Coca-Cola Company purchased Topo Chico so now it’s more widely available throughout the United States. After waiting about six weeks my local Wegmans finally had it back in stock. Whole Foods carries it by the 12 pack and individually.
This is the kind of recipe you can commit to memory. Fill a highball or stemless wine glass with ice. Add two parts blanco or silver tequila (100% agave) to one part freshly squeezed lime juice and top with Topo Chico. If you’re feeling fancy, garnish with a lime slice.
I also read that some bartenders pour out some Topo Chico from a well chilled bottle and add tequila and lime juice directly to the bottle. Ed tried this technique and recommends it. You’ll need to pour out about 3-1/2 ounces of Topo Chico before adding tequila and lime juice to the bottle. Make sure you drink what you poured out so you stay hydrated!
