Don’t worry – this isn’t a drink from the popular TV talk show. I’ve never even seen it. Rather it’s a drink from a wonderful restaurant in the town of Lake Placid, NY. The town is actually situated on Mirror Lake and the view is of this lake. Lake Placid (the lake) is nearby.
Ed and I enjoyed a few days of vacation in Lake Placid at a cute cottage. For our final dinner we went to the Mirror Lake Inn and had an amazing dinner at The View.
I used our time away to do some research on future cocktails for Riegl Palate. I love to take pictures of cocktail menus and recreate drinks at home.
While I’m not usually a Cosmo (or Cosmopolitan) drinker, I do adore anything with rosé wine so was immediately drawn to this on the menu. It turns out that the drink only bears some resemblance to a typical Cosmo – vodka, triple sec, cranberry and lime juice. Instead this drink contains vodka, Chambord (black raspberry liqueur), Cointreau (orange liqueur – similar to triple sec) and rosé wine. It called for citron (or lemon) vodka which I didn’t have so instead I steeped vodka with some lemon zest a few hours in advance. If you don’t have time for this step, don’t worry, you can just use regular vodka.
My version at home wasn’t as bright a pink as the one I enjoyed at The View (it definitely had more of the ‘cranberry’ color). This is likely because I used a light colored rosé wine. I lean towards rosé wines from Provence, France which are typically light in hue. A little pink also comes from the Chambord, too. If you want more pink, look for a rosé with a darker pink color.
As a side note, The View (and the hotel) take safety during COVID-19 very seriously. The owners write on their website “It is our commitment to be among the very cleanest and safest resorts in America and the best in the Northeast. As such, we have acquired the most sophisticated, hospital-grade cleaning and sanitizing equipment, supplies and protocols to exceed regulatory standards.” We definitely saw it when we arrived for dinner and throughout our meal. We felt incredibly safe during our time there. Plus, the food and beverages were wonderful and so was the view.
The View's Rosé Cosmo | | Print |
- 1-1/2 ounces vodka (see Notes)
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- ¼ ounce Chambord
- ¼ ounce Cointreau
- 3 ounces rosé wine
- Garnish: lime wheel
- Pour vodka into a small container. Use a microplane to zest lemon. Mix vodka and lemon zest together and let sit at room temperature for a one to two hours. The longer it sits the stronger the lemon flavor will be. You can double, triple, etc. and place in the same container. Before using, strain vodka through a fine mesh sieve.
- Place strained vodka, Chambord, Cointreau and rosé wine in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake for 30 seconds. Pour cocktail into a coupe glass and garnish with a lime wheel.
I don’t have a sweet tooth. I forego the lime and float (when I can get it) a fresh sage leaf. Also, if you like bitter as I do, change out the lemon zest for a thin twist of grapefruit peel. Great blog and great recipe. Thank you!
Jon – Thank you for your variations. I love sage leaves and the idea of floating one on a cocktail.
